Privacy Policy

Effective date: [at v3 release] · Applies to: the "Format Painter for Gmail" Chrome extension and the formatpainter.app website · Contact: support@formatpainter.app

The short version: everything happens in your browser, only on mail.google.com, and your email content never leaves your device. On the free plan the extension sends nothing anywhere. If you buy Pro, it sends only your license key and a random installation ID to confirm the purchase — no analytics, no tracking, no selling data.

1. What the extension does

It copies text formatting from one selection in Gmail's compose window and applies it to another. All of that happens locally in your browser, only on mail.google.com.

2. What it never collects

  • The content of your emails — never read off-page, stored, or transmitted.
  • Your browsing, clicks, or usage behavior — no analytics, ads, or cookies.
  • Your Google account or password — no account is needed at all.

3. What's stored on your device

  • Your settings (which styles a paint carries, theme) and the most recently copied formatting.
  • Local counters used only inside the extension — for example the free plan's monthly apply counter.
  • If you have Pro: your license key, saved styles, and a cached license confirmation so Pro works offline.

Settings, saved styles, and the monthly counter use Chrome's built-in sync, which is performed by Chrome itself, not by us. Uninstalling the extension removes all of it.

4. If you buy Pro

Payments are processed by our payment processor, Polar, which collects the billing details needed for the transaction — we never see your card number. Polar makes basic purchase details (your name, email, and what you bought) available to us so we can verify licenses and help with support. Polar's privacy policy applies to checkout.

License activation sends exactly two things to our license server: your license key and a random installation ID (generated by the extension; not linked to your Google account). The server keeps a minimal record of which installations activated a key, to limit devices per license — nothing else.

Teams licenses work the same way with the organization key — nothing per-person is added. Support email: if you write to us, we use your message only to help you.

5. This website

formatpainter.app uses Cloudflare Web Analytics — cookieless, aggregate page-view counts that don't identify or track individual visitors. Checkout happens on Polar's pages under Polar's privacy policy.

6. Your rights (EU/GDPR)

We process purchase and license data to perform a contract (Art. 6(1)(b)), support requests under legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)), and tax records under legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)). You can ask us to access, correct, or delete your data — practically, your support emails and license-activation record — and we'll handle it within 30 days. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.

7. Data retention

  • License-activation records expire automatically about 13 months after a license was last used — no license activity, no record.
  • Support emails: kept while useful for helping you; deleted on request.
  • Purchase/tax records: retained by Polar per its legal obligations.

8. Compliance

  • Card data (PCI DSS): payment cards are handled entirely by Polar and its PCI DSS–certified payment infrastructure. Card numbers never touch our systems.
  • GDPR: built on GDPR principles — data minimization and purpose limitation — and we honor access and deletion requests from anyone, anywhere (section 6).
  • CCPA and similar state laws: we're below those laws' applicability thresholds, and we don't sell or share personal information regardless.
  • SOC 2 / ISO 27001: we don't claim formal certifications — they require third-party audits sized for larger companies. Our security posture is architectural: email content never leaves the browser, and paid licensing transmits only a license key and a random installation ID.

9. Chrome Web Store disclosures

The extension's use of data is limited to providing its single purpose — copying and applying formatting in Gmail, and validating Pro licenses. We do not sell user data, use it for advertising, or transfer it except to the payment processor as described above.

Limited Use statement: Format Painter for Gmail's use of information received from Google APIs, and its use of user data generally, adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

10. Changes

Changes are posted on this page with an updated effective date; material changes are also noted in the extension's changelog.
